What are your credentials and past experience for working in your position?
My B.Eng in Computer Engineering gave me experience working on lower-level programming languages, such as C, Embedded C, etc. This gave me insight into challenges to lower-level programming as every piece of memory you use or misuse can break the system. I didn’t expect to work in Application Development, but ultimately it was a good fit for me. My background gave me an excellent basis to understand software problems from various levels.
Management experience came while at S44 when I had the opportunity to define some of our early software practices, such as proper source control and early team structures.
What do you like about working at S44?
S44 gives a lot of opportunity for both horizontal and vertical growth, meaning that if you want to be a leader and demonstrate this, you can move vertically quickly. However, horizontally, you can be challenged in your current role if you don’t want to move “vertically” and continue learning and growing without taking on a new position.
Although we have a lot to do and get done, we try to have fun doing it and have team-building events, activities, and a strong work/life balance culture.
What’s your background?
I moved to the US when I was 9—born in the Netherlands. I’m a dual English citizen, and I came to S44 from University (McGill, Montreal). By the time I was 9, I had lived in 3 countries, and by 19, I had lived in 4 countries, although I don’t remember the Netherland.
I think this allowed me to meet very different types of people. Also, McGill had a significant international student body, so I met people from places I have never even thought about. I think this helped give me perspective.
What are the values that drive you?
I believe that it takes a team to succeed and that team members should have everything they need to achieve their goals. I look forward to mentoring and being mentored, there’s always something new to learn, and everyone can teach something, regardless of qualified experience.
I have a passion for solving more technical problems; there’s no better feeling than making a difference by removing challenges other people face.
